Many of us use turmeric in cooking to add a golden hue and piquancy to our dishes. But this oriental spice can be useful not only when taken orally. In India, it is rightly called “the seasoning of beauty and youth.” Homemade face masks based on it have a beneficial effect on the condition of the skin, helping to cope with minor imperfections.

Turmeric for face care

The spice got its name from the herbaceous plant of the same name - curcuma longa, or domestic turmeric - cultivated to obtain that same seasoning and as a folk medicine. The powder is prepared by simply grinding dried rhizomes. The yellow color, in turn, is a consequence of the high content of curcumin, one of the strongest natural dyes.

Turmeric is a close relative of another no less famous seasoning - ginger (the plants are in the same family)

But the finished spice contains more than just pigment. You can also find other components in its composition, including those beneficial for the skin:

  • essential oils that improve blood circulation;
  • vitamin C, which tightens the epidermis, smoothes wrinkles and improves immunity;
  • pyridoxine and niacin (nicotinic acid), which trigger regeneration;
  • choline, which normalizes the functioning of the sweat glands;
  • vitamin K1, which eliminates swelling and localizes inflammation.

It is these properties that led to the use of turmeric in cosmetology. Like clay, it is well suited for oily, problematic, combination or aging skin. True, it is extremely difficult to see products with its addition in regular stores; most likely, you will have to look among natural Indian or Thai cosmetics. Fortunately, recipes for this type of remedy are not so complicated and can be easily reproduced at home.

Turmeric is a natural antibiotic and natural rejuvenator

Medicinal properties of oriental spices

In folk and Ayurvedic medicine, turmeric paste is known for its antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties; even burns are treated with it. It has a similar effect on problem skin. The seasoning is one of the “hot” ones: it improves blood circulation, accelerates metabolism and epidermal regeneration processes. Other medicinal properties of turmeric include removing toxins, high-quality cleansing of the skin (especially in combination with clay) and increasing its elasticity.

Masks with turmeric not only solve standard skin problems, but also slow down possible facial hair growth

Recipes for masks with turmeric

Turmeric, like any other heating-drying component of homemade masks, is not very suitable for use on dry skin types

For facial scrub

If you need to deal with oily shine or quickly remove traces of rashes, you can use an exfoliating mixture. To prepare it you will need:

  • peas;
  • turmeric.

Cereals need to be crushed with a blender or coffee grinder. Proportions are calculated based on the required volume. For one mask, it is enough to take 1 tsp. peas and rice, adding turmeric to them (on the tip of a knife). If you want to stock up on the product for future use, then take 1 glass of ground cereal and about 1 tsp. spices without a slide. The finished mixture can be stored for six months in any convenient container.

For dry skin, it is advisable to take fresh peas, but in this case it is better to prepare the mask at once, since such a component significantly reduces the shelf life of the mixture

The composition is used as follows:

  1. A small amount is soaked in milk or water;
  2. Gently distribute the mask over the face.
  3. Wait about 5–15 minutes, massaging your face for a while.
  4. Wash off with plain water.

The condition of the skin noticeably improves after 2-3 uses, but to maintain the result you will need to resort to cleansing about 1-3 times a week.

Adding coarse sea or table salt will enhance the scrubbing properties of the product. This option is perfect for cleansing oily skin, but can unnecessarily injure thin or sensitive skin. In addition, do not forget that using such a mask for scratches, inflamed acne or pimples can further aggravate the problem.

Anti-wrinkle

On the shelves of warm countries, among natural skin care products, you can find the so-called turmeric powder. This is a powder mixture for the face with a rejuvenating effect. Of course, if you really want to, you can purchase it in an online store, but the composition of this “miracle against wrinkles” is not complicated and can be easily prepared at home. You just need to mix:

  • 1 tsp. turmeric;
  • 3 tsp. dry cream (milk).

Despite the fact that spice is the main ingredient, very little is needed. The resulting powder is diluted with a small amount of milk and applied to the skin for about 10–20 minutes. After rinsing, the face is wiped with tonic or micellar water to remove any remaining yellow pigment. The mask has a gentle effect on the skin, restoring elasticity and improving its condition with regular use: 1–4 times a week.

For problem skin

If you need treatment and prevention of acne, take:

  • 0.25–0.5 tsp. turmeric;
  • 1–2 tbsp. l. chopped almonds, previously peeled (can be replaced with almond flour);
  • 1-5 drops of lavender or tea tree oil.

Method of preparation and use:

  1. The resulting mixture is brought to a slurry state with water.
  2. The composition is distributed to problem areas of the face (except for the areas around the lips and eyes).
  3. The mask is washed off after 15–20 minutes.

An interesting alternative to homemade masks is ubtan - a natural mixture (Ayurvedic powder) used instead of gel for washing.

For pigment spots

You can noticeably smooth out, or even completely remove, pigment spots using a simple recipe, including:

  • 1 tsp. turmeric;
  • 1–2 tbsp. l. sour cream.

The mixed components are applied to the face for 10 minutes, during which time the mask must not dry out. You should expect visible results after about 1–3 months of using the product 1–2 times a week.

For deep cleansing

The unusual combination of components of the following mask will not only cleanse your pores, but also make your skin smooth and soft. You need to take:

  • 0.25 tsp turmeric;
  • 1 tbsp. l. green clay;
  • 0.5 tbsp. l. pink clay;
  • water;
  • a few drops of salicylic acid (no more than 1 tsp);
  • 0.5–1 tsp. almond oil.

Cosmetic clay has a beneficial effect on problem skin, which is why it is often included in both homemade and ready-made masks.

  1. Mix the dry ingredients thoroughly: clays (pink and green) and turmeric. The powder should be as homogeneous as possible. This will avoid redness (burning) of the skin or the appearance of persistent yellow spots.
  2. Dilute the mixture with water to a creamy consistency.
  3. Add base oil. In the absence of almond, you can take apricot, peach or olive (at worst, sunflower will do). The appropriate amount is determined experimentally, but the condition of the skin will help you get your bearings: oily skin needs moisturizing much less than dry skin.
  4. Stir salicylic acid into the mixture. If you have never used it before or done chemical peels, then it is better to limit yourself to 2-10 drops of a product with a concentration of no more than 2%.

A freshly prepared mask is applied to the face and left on for about 5-10 minutes, after which it is washed off. During use, a tingling sensation may be felt, the reasons for which lie in the action of cosmetic clay with acid. A slight tingling sensation is considered a normal reaction, but if the discomfort is noticeable, you should wash your face immediately.

Adding a few drops of salicylic acid to the mask eliminates minor rashes and evens out skin tone.

You should not use this product too often. For a visible effect, 1-2 times every 10 days is enough. Positive results appear after the first procedure. The mask removes impurities and eliminates minor imperfections.

If you have sensitive and irritation-prone skin, it is better to make a mask without adding salicylic acid. Others are strongly advised not to overdo it. At best, its excess will dry out your face, at worst, it will leave a chemical burn. For the same reason, it is advisable to avoid using 5–10% solutions.

For facial rejuvenation

Even blue clay diluted with ordinary water can correct the oval of the face. But the effect of natural minerals can be enhanced by adding the same yellow spice. For 1 tbsp. l. A small pinch of turmeric is enough for clay powder, and if you are afraid of staining, then dilute the resulting mixture with milk or kefir.

Turmeric and blue clay have similar properties: face lifting, eliminating acne and oiliness

Anti acne

To prepare and use a simple recipe that effectively eliminates acne and traces of comedones, you need:

  1. Approximately 0.5 tsp. dilute turmeric with water to a thick, homogeneous consistency. If the skin is light, then the amount of spice is reduced and compensated by adding cosmetic clay or ground oatmeal (also about 0.5 tsp).
  2. Mix 3-8 drops of tea tree essential oil into the mixture.
  3. Leave for 15–20 minutes, then mix thoroughly again.
  4. Apply the composition to clean facial skin, avoiding the area around the lips and eyes.
  5. Rinse off after 5–15 minutes.

While the composition is in use, a slight tingling sensation may appear on the face. If there is a strong burning sensation, then you need to reduce the concentration of the ether.

Both components have antiseptic properties, thanks to which such a mask can stop the spread of acne and speed up the process of their treatment. An intensive course can last no more than a month, including up to 5 applications per week in the absence of peeling and dryness, after which you need to take a break for at least 14–20 days. For prevention, 1–2 procedures every 10 days are sufficient.

Crushed oatmeal is an excellent remedy for solving dermatological problems.

For oily skin

To normalize the functioning of the sebaceous glands, masks with turmeric must be used regularly, but not more than 1-3 times a week. To solve this problem, one of the following compositions is suitable:

Any of the proposed products is applied to the skin for 10–15 minutes, after which it is washed off. A single application temporarily softens the skin and eliminates oily shine. You can consolidate the result and remove any remaining curcumin using a kefir-oat mixture.

For nutrition and hydration

To prepare a nourishing mask, you will need the following ingredients:

  • 2 tbsp. l. thick kefir or yogurt without additives;
  • 1 tsp. natural honey;
  • 1/4 tsp. turmeric.

The advantage of this recipe is that it is suitable for both combination and dry skin types. Dairy products in combination with honey soften the effect of turmeric, brighten and nourish the face. The principle of using the composition, as for most home remedies, is standard: leave it on the skin for about 10–15 minutes with a frequency of 1–3 applications per week. The effect can be seen after the first treatment, although dryness will take about 2 months to resolve. If the main goal is to remove signs of photoaging or other pigmentation, positive results will appear no earlier than 2-3 months.

Turmeric eye mask

To restore tone and get a rested appearance of the skin, prepare a turmeric mask for rejuvenation from the following components:

  • 0.25 tsp turmeric;
  • 0.5 tsp. rose water;
  • 1 tbsp. l. cream (milk).

You should not expect instant rejuvenation from using the composition, but applying the mixture to the skin in 15–20 minutes will make it soft and fresh. And after 4-6 months of using the product (1-3 times a week), the overall appearance of the face will improve and even the contour will be corrected due to a slight tightening effect.

Rose water is an aqueous solution of rose oil, where 0.025–0.1% is essential components

Rose water can be prepared at home. For this you only need fresh garden roses or rose hips (it is better to take fragrant varieties). Moreover, they must be grown without the use of chemicals. After carefully washing the petals, place them in a saucepan, fill with water and cover with a lid. The container must be put on gas and, without bringing to a boil, simmer until they lose color. After this, all that remains is to cool the finished water and strain, after squeezing out the petals. The liquid retains its beneficial properties for about a year, but only if stored in the refrigerator or a cool, dark place.

To improve complexion

A mask to improve complexion is not suitable for those with sensitive skin types, but will help girls with age spots and freckles. To prepare it you will need the following components:

  • 0.25 tsp turmeric;
  • 1 tsp. lemon juice;
  • 1 egg yolk.

After mixing, the composition is applied to clean skin and washed off with warm water after about 5–20 minutes. An intensive tone-evening course includes up to 3-4 procedures per week, but in general lasts no longer than 3 months, after which it is recommended to take a break. For prevention, 1–2 applications of the mask over 7–10 days are sufficient. Efficiency depends on the structure of the skin, but on average, the result becomes noticeable about a month after regular use of the composition.

To eliminate oily shine

To quickly tidy up oily skin and gradually normalize sebum secretion processes, just prepare a simple homemade mask:

  1. A small amount of turmeric (at the tip of a teaspoon) is mixed with 1-3 tbsp. l. flour. The classic version involves using chickpeas, but it is acceptable to use almond, coconut or wheat. The main thing is to ensure that there are no food additives in the composition.
  2. The mixture is diluted with a small amount of warm cream or milk (you should get a paste suitable for applying to the face). It is recommended to let the mixture sit for 10–15 minutes before the procedure.
  3. The composition is applied to a cleansed face.
  4. The mask is kept for no more than 15 minutes (to avoid staining the skin yellow).

The product temporarily removes excess fat, simultaneously eliminating impurities. For lasting results, you will need to use the recipe 1-3 times a week for at least 1-3 months.

Contraindications and side effects

Being a natural product, turmeric does not have any specific prohibitions, apart from those that apply to the use of any other home remedy:

  • individual intolerance;
  • severe peeling;
  • open wounds on the treated area;
  • exacerbation of dermatological diseases;
  • active purulent inflammation.

Due to the warming effect of a mask with turmeric, it is not recommended for girls suffering from rosacea or rosacea (visible network of capillaries)

Possible side effects are also minimal. Only hypersensitive skin reactions and allergies should be taken into account. But many also consider the effects of turmeric pigments to be a side effect.

Staining is easy to avoid by following a few rules. The problem of yellow spots often takes by surprise those who believe that a lot and a long time are always good. In masks with turmeric, everything is somewhat different, since a large amount of seasoning and overexposure of the mixture inexorably lead to the appearance of yellowness. This golden hue is difficult to wash off and can remain on the face for several days. Those with pale skin are advised to reduce the dosage of spice and select mask recipes with lightening ingredients. If trouble does occur, use traditional cleansing compositions: lotions, tonics, micellar water, etc. Whitening products are also suitable for home remedies: citrus juice, chamomile decoction, dairy or fermented milk products, etc.

To achieve the lightening effect, chamomile decoction must be used regularly.

When exposed to turmeric, a tingling or tingling sensation may be felt. It’s okay if it is mild, but if clearly unpleasant or even painful sensations appear, the mask must be washed off immediately.

In rare cases, skin irritation also occurs in those who are accustomed to adding turmeric to their food. We must not forget about other allergenic ingredients of masks: honey, lemon juice, essential oils, etc. You can avoid negative consequences (by also checking the degree of coloration of the skin) with a preliminary test: apply a small amount of the finished mixture to the inner surface of the elbow. If after 20–30 minutes there is no redness, itching or other symptoms, the composition can be used on the face.
